Like the blazer, the peacoat has naval roots. It's said to be based on the outerwear worn by Dutch, British, and American sailors in the 18th and 19th centuries. The word's origins are thought to be from the Dutch "pea-jacka," a combination of "pea," meaning a sturdy blue woolen cloth, and "jakka," meaning a heavy, short men's jacket. Just to be clear, "pea" has nothing to do with the English word for green peas.
The peacoat is not only stylish, but also extremely functional. Its length is cut short to allow for easy leg movement. This coat was extremely practical on deck, where a lot of movement was required.
