It was originally adopted as a parka worn over a field jacket, supporting US soldiers in their missions in cold regions. When a large amount of this deadstock was shipped to the UK, it became popular among young British people known as "Mods," and was named after the culture they loved, and it was named the "Mod coat."
It is also sometimes called the "fishtail" due to the unique shape of the back. The M-51 parka is a classic military jacket that has been loved for over half a century since its creation in 1951.
