Indigo is a natural dye made from plants. The leaves of the plant are dried and dyed using "sukumo," which is made by fermenting and aging the leaves for over 100 days. Sukumo is the base material for indigo dyeing, but since it does not dissolve in water as it is and does not become a dye, it is mixed with lye lime liquor and fermented to create a dye solution. The cloth is dipped in the dye solution, taken out, and exposed to the air, repeating this process over and over again until the desired color is achieved little by little.
